Our Mission

The Calderwood Writing Initiative at the Boston Athenæum is dedicated to improving the quality of expository writing by students in the greater New England area. To that end, it is guided by four fundamental principles:

• Teachers of all subjects can foster critical thinking and effective student writing
• Teachers who are themselves writers will be more effective teachers of writing
• Teachers need support to become better writers and to devise successful approaches to teaching writing
• Students who like to write--as well as students intimidated by writing--need support, encouragement, and a cultural environment that values writing across all disciplines
